An annulment is similar to a divorce in that it effectively dissolves your marriage. There are two types of annulments: religious and civil. While religious annulments are acknowledged by the church, the court does not recognize them, whatsoever. In other words, in order to legally dissolve your marriage you must obtain a civil annulment. There are certain criteria you need to meet in order to obtain a civil annulment in Connecticut. To obtain a civil annulment you would need to prove one or more of the following…
- Your spouse is already in a valid, legal marriage to another person.
- Your marriage officiant was not properly licensed.
- You and your spouse would need to be closely related.
- Your spouse has a mental or physical condition that they purposely hid from you.
It is important to understand that civil annulments are not any faster than a divorce. Therefore, do not perceive it as a “quick” alternative.
